The Scottish Government’s 1+2 languages policy requires all pupils to learn a first additional language (L2) from P1 and a second (L3) from P5, running all the way through to S3.
A rich and continuous language learning experience throughout primary school sets the foundations of all language learning thereafter. By engaging with this learning experience collaboratively, exemplifying growth mindsets and exploring language and culture in partnership with learners, we can make a significant and positive impact on children’s experience of language learning.
At Frogston, our L2 is Spanish and our L3 is British Sign Language!
In all classes, pupils learn Spanish through their daily routines as well as through targeted Spanish lessons. We also greet each other in Spanish throughout the day. Here are some of the key phrases your child will hear every day at Frogston Primary School:
- Hola (O-la) – Hello
- Buenos días (BWAY-nos DEE-as) – Good morning
- Buenas tardes (BWAY-nas TAR-des) – Good afternoon/evening
- Buen fin de semana (BWEN FEEN de seh-MAN-ah) – Have a great weekend
- Adiós (A-dyohs) – Goodbye
- Por favor (por fa-vor) – Please
- Gracias (GRA-thee-as) – Thank you
- De nada (deh NAH-dah) – You’re welcome
- ¿Que tal? (kay tahl) – How are you? (informal)
- Bien (byen) – Fine.
- Muy bien (mooy byen) – Very good
- Así, así (ah-SEE ah-SEE) – I’m OK
- No bien. (noh byen) – Not good
- Mal / Fatal. (mahl / fah-TAHL)
- Estoy cansado/a. (I am tired – use ‘o’ if male, ‘a’ if female) – es-toy kahn-sah-doh/dah
- ¿y tú? (ee too?) – And you?
To support language learning, every pupil has a languagenut login. Children will be given these from P3 upwards to allow them to also practise Spanish at home, however if you would like it earlier, please just ask your child’s CT or a member of SLT.
